A Time for New Commitments

I’m not really sure exactly how this blog post will end up, but honestly I had trouble thinking of something to write about. So at least I now have somewhere to start. If you go back to what I believe was my first blog post as “girl vs planet”, I was in an interesting place. We had just moved to Arizona pretty recently, and I was kind of in the process of figuring out who I really wanted to be. I mean, I think that honestly we all are continually learning about ourselves and who we are, but moving across the country to where you know very few people really puts you in a place to practically reinvent yourself. And while I don’t think I have done that, I think I do have a firmer grasp on who I am now, as well as who I want to be.

You know, we’ve been here for almost a year and a half now, and sometimes I still can’t believe I live in Arizona. I guess 30+ years of growing up and living in the same place will do that to you. One of the things that I love about living here, though, is that almost no one that lives here is from here. Everyone is a transplant, which I find pretty cool, actually. And, all those people that are transplants and willing to move from somewhere else, are generally pretty well-traveled as well, which makes it a lot easier for Ricky and I to relate to people here. We came across a lot of people in Indy that just really didn’t travel that much and just thought Indianapolis was so great. I mean, it’s an ok city, don’t get me wrong, but those of you say that, have you honestly really been to that many other places? Have you lived anywhere else?

So here’s the conclusions I’ve come to. I love living in Arizona. As I mentioned in my previous post, even though it is hard for me to realize I live here now, it does feel more like home than Indiana now. I love the weather, with our hot and hotter summer, our no-snow holidays, and event season… Arizona is always packed full of all kinds of events to go to, from the Phoenix Open to MLB’s Cactus League spring training. It may not physically be right on the west coast, but it’s in the west coast part of the country, which has a very different feel than the midwest or back east. It’s more relaxed, and I love that. So… I’m an Arizonan. Or whatever the word is. I probably should know that if I’m gonna call myself one, huh?

On top of that, I’m an introvert. I do love people, and I try to be a good friend to everyone and get to know people, but I definitely need my downtime, and I love that. I love to read and be at home watching movies or TV shows. I’m also very much a geek. I love my computer and all my Apple devices. I love geeky TV shows and movies like The X-Files and Star Trek. I also love learning more about myself and people and the world. I used to go to church all the time to do that, but now I’m finding other avenues. It’s kind of hard to explain. I really just love learning and want to find ways to be more at peace with life and be a better person, so I seek that.

Finally, there’s the kind of person I want to be. I want to be healthy, both spiritually, emotionally, and physically. I think there’s a balance to that, and while I feel like I’m getting there emotionally and to a certain extent spiritually, I need some work physically. So that’s another goal of mine in this month of November. I have a plan in place, and I’m starting it soon. It’s another commitment, so I guess November is becoming a month of new commitments for me. Here’s hoping I keep them all and become more of the person I want to be.
